Residential Architectural Photography in Northern California

Ruminations on unexpected sources of inspiration…

Collaborating with Adam Payne, owner of Payne Design+Build, to help tell the story of this northern CA residence ticked all my boxes: visually compelling design (IMHO), a client I like, and some interesting technical challenges. (Full disclosure: I have more than my fair share of shoots that follow this recipe, for which I am grateful.)

I expected this shoot to be fun, Adam has hired me before and it has gone well. To my surprise, this shoot was so much more: it inspired me professionally and personally. On the surface, this was just another residential architectural shoot. Predictably, I needed to understand why…

As I deconstructed the shoot in my mind, I started to understand why this experience was special: by hiring me Adam invited me into his world, and the world he has created for himself is inspiring. Adam is an exemplary communicator. He listens carefully, he’s thoughtful, and uses words intentionally. He glows with calming, positive energy. I saw the results of this approach in the rich, warm relationships Adam enjoys with his clients and collaborators.

Add to this Adam’s great eye for design, his dedication to excellent craftsmanship, and a thought provoking post-shoot conversation over a beer…voilà: inspiration!

I left this project with a renewed appreciation for the power of deep collaboration and the value of creating a community in everything we touch. Perhaps we need more influence from the Adam Paynes of the world now more than ever.

Covid-19 Protocols for Safe Photo Shoots

While we are open for business and actively shooting, we are limited in what and where we can shoot. Local rules are changing rapidly, and we are assessing each project for health and safety on a case-by-case basis.

Our two main criteria for scheduling a shoot:

  1. It must be allowed under local regulations.
  2. We must be able to create a safe environment for crew, talent, and client.

Covid-19 is with us for now, and we’ve created protocols for our shoots to help keep everyone involved safe. Our protocols are based on current CDC guidelines, California Statewide Industry Guidance, and Sonoma County Business Mitigation Requirements. As these guidelines and regulations evolve we will update our protocols.
